Project Description
AllRock was retained to complete a comprehensive geotechnical investigation
in St. John’s, NL in support of a forcemain and trunk sewer replacement over a
four (4) kilometer length in the City of St. John’s (Goulds). With the roadway
showing signs of aging, this critical stretch was in major need of rehabilitation.
This stretch of roadway happens to be the main arterial route through to the
Avalon’s Southern Shore, and is the main road in Goulds.
AllRock Role
AllRock first coordinated all underground and overhead utility clearances over
the four (4) km stretch with each utility company. AllRock then subcontracted a
local drilling contractor, and supervised drilling operations in the field. Once
field work was successfully completed, AllRock’s role switched to laboratory
soil testing and geotechnical analysis and design. In the end, AllRock provided
a comprehensive Geotechnical report outlining aspects such as soil conditions,
site preparation, pavement design, water control, slope recommendations, etc.
Challenges
One major challenge faced by AllRock during this project was the aggressive
timeline set by the client. This aggressive timeline meant that multiple aspects
of construction were occurring simultaneouslyand that constant
communication and organization were required both internally, and with all
parties on the jobsite. AllRock required staff to communicate and work together
to ensure testing and inspection for multiple construction activities were
covered at any one time. Any deficiencies outlined during inspection would
need to be immediately communicated and rectified by the contractor, all the
while keeping the Client in the loop.
