Project Description
AllRock was retained by Nuroad Construction Limited to complete the required
materials testing services on Highway 407 in Toronto, Ontario. Highway 407
is a busy private highway, running through multiple heavily populated regions
of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Due to the heavy traffic and cost
implications of road closures, any construction and maintenance that is
required on the highway is of the utmost importance for the owners.
The summer season is the only time that major construction and maintenance
and construction can be completed, and any maintenance completed during
these times must be completed with an accelerated timeline. The concrete
road panels making up Highway 407 require frequent maintenance to support
heavy traffic loads. When replacing these panels, fast curing concrete must be
used to reduce lane closure time. Therefore, concrete testing is critical to
indicate when these lanes can be opened once they reach the required
strength.

AllRock Role
AllRock first reviewed the concrete mix design and engineering specifications
for the project. In the field, AllRock completed slump and air testing of the fresh
concrete of each truck to ensure the mix fell within the required specifications.
At pre-determined intervals, AllRock’s technician’s obtained concrete cylinder
samples and allowed them to cure as per the CSA A23.1 requirements. Once
cured, the samples were transported back to AllRock’s laboratory to complete
the required unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. The tests results
were then reported by AllRock’s materials engineer to the Client.
